CHEF CHAOUEN STONED AND SMILING Chefchaouen is situated in the mountains of Rif, just inland from Tangier and
Tetouan. The area of which Chefchaouen is the main city is one of the main producers of cannabis in Morocco. Cannabis is being
sold all over town, but it is both easy to notice and easy to overlook. The reason for this is that it is such an intrinsic
part of the city life, it is sold together with vegetables, herbs and spices, and that nobody makes much fuzz about it.
Chefchaouen is a proof of the fact that cannabis doesn't necessarily lead to crime, as long as the cannabis
itself is not considered illegal. Chefchaouen must be the safest place in Morocco and there will be no warnings against walking
around in the streets even in the middle of the night. But Chefchaouen has more attractions, and these apply to all types
of travellers. The city is simply beautiful, with simple houses with illuminatingly white walls and doors as blue as the sky
above you. Every street is better taken care of and cleaner than any other city I have visited in my life. But that's not
all,it's just a culture city where you can rest in peace and quitte.

CHEF CHAOUEN SOME HISTORY Chefchaouen has a history which can intrigue most people. Until 1920 only three
Europeans had visited this place even though it is less than 100 km from Europe itself. And all these three men had to be
disguised, and one was killed by the locals. The city remained a bastion against European influence for a long time, due to
its founding as a refuge for Moors fleeing from Spain after Christianity brought the country into the Dark Ages.
The Chefchaoueners are slow on taking up Western habits, at least those living in the big old city, and thereby
giving the exceptional beauty of Chefchauen as a gift to us all. The only major exception are the usual bottles of Coca Cola
that are be found in every shop and cafe the second most popular drink here, second only to the fresh and delicious water
coming down from the mountains. Chefchaouen. Where the water comes from Chefchaouen is one of the few
places in Morocco where everyone can drink the tap water. Ice-cold water come flushing down from the mountains, so there is
virtually nothing that pollutes it only oxygen that is whipped into it. Right north of the old city, the Ras el
Ma is located, and this is the source that feeds all of Chefchaouen's inhabitants with the water. The surroundings are very
nice, with big trees with flowers and a small system of passageways and small bridges. This is also the point where the mountain
walls become too steep for any settlements, something that adds to the quiet, yet remarkable atmosphere.
